ASC To Unveil New Product at T.H.E. Show Newport
Oregon-based company will head to Newport Beach, CA June 3-5 to unveil the IsoThermal Tube Trap at T.H.E. Show Newport in Irvine, CA
Eugene, OR. May 11, 2016: Acoustic Sciences Corporation – manufacturer of the iconic TubeTrap – recently added a new product to their expansive line of acoustic treatment products. It’s called the IsoThermal TubeTrap and they are unveiling it to the public June 3-5 at T.H.E. Show Newport in Irvine, CA.
The IsoThermal TubeTrap delivers twice the bass absorption of an equivalent-sized TubeTrap between 30 Hz and 250 Hz. That’s why the IsoThermal TubeTrap has two chrome dots along the rim instead of the traditional one dot: two dots means twice the power! Technically speaking the IsoThermal TubeTrap is an isothermal-class RC time constant bass trap combined with the adjustable treble diffusion of our regular TubeTrap.
“It happens at Mach 1, the speed of sound,” says Art Noxon, Founder and President of ASC and inventor of the original TubeTrap and the new IsoThermal TubeTrap. “We only have a split second to minimize the phase add/cancel effects of the rear wall bounce. The direct signal pulse rushes past your ears, impacts the rear wall and springs back upstream to interfere with direct signal at your listening position.”
Look for various ASC products throughout T.H.E. Show in Newport and stop by the ASC booth in the Ballroom (M20 on the map) to see the new IsoThermal TubeTraps and to talk with Art Noxon directly. Also, make sure to sign up for the raffle, where you could win a copy of the ASC MATT & Acoustic Test CD that gives you a detailed analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of your listening room or home theater.

Bob Hodas will focus on the speaker/room interface and optimizing system performance through proper placement and room treatments. Sections of his presentation will cover speaker/listener positioning, integrating subwoofers, selecting the best style of acoustic treatments for a specific problem and how those treatments should be placed. Slides will demonstrate frequency and phase responses of proper and improper setups.
Grant Samuelsen of Shunyata Research will explain why the form of and method of electrical delivery chosen for Music, Film, Recording and Medical systems will have a profound effect on performance. Grant will share the tips and tools necessary to achieve optimal protection, current delivery and noise reduction without spending a fortune on after-market cables or AC tweaks. Grant will show measurement, video and application examples to highlight this discussion, with questions and answers afterward.
Bruce Jacobs of Stillpoints will discuss the importance of system noise reduction through mechanical isolation, acoustical treatments, and signal grounding. He will present true mechanical isolation and the ability to remove ultra band vibrations found in all electronics. Bruce will show how to sonically remove your loudspeaker from your room environment. He will discuss signal ground noise reduction and why it is important to music reproduction. He will also discuss the difference between hearing the recording environment or hearing your room and how Apertures address this perspective.
John Tucker of Exemplar Audio will speak about his minimalistic approach in loudspeaker and electronics design. His loudspeakers are all high efficiency, point source designs with minimal or no crossover components at all. His electronics have the fewest stages as possible with the best possible components. John’s driving philosophy is that the best stage in the world is not as good as no stage at all. Inherent in simplicity is complexity.
Great systems are accomplished when the details are completed.

“This is the kind of design philosophy that has the company constantly improving their speakers and investigating every detail that goes into the system. The use of solid hardwood is part of what make these unique and the DiD devices utilize dissimilar materials to dissipate resonance coupled with bearings to also isolate the electronic component from vibration. They are precision made of highly polished billet aluminum, solid Cherry and brass with steel bearings.”
We will have two adjoining rooms. One will have our “live” setup featuring the Daedalus Athena speakers and brand new 30 watt tube SET mono blocks from ModWright. Our second “static” room will have headphone stations with the new ModWright Tryst headphone amp, and demos of the DiD. All cabling will be with WyWires and room treatment by GIK.

AudioQuest DragonFly Black & DragonFly Red: Improved Performance, Greater Value, Compatibility with Apple and Android Mobile Devices
IRVINE, Calif., April 2016—Since 2012, press and public alike have enthusiastically embraced AudioQuest’s multi-award-winning DragonFly USB digital-to-analog converter as the rare audio product that bridges the gap between die-hard audiophiles and mainstream music lovers.
While the original DragonFly defined the market for micro-DACs, its USB power draw made it compatible with computers only. Since DragonFly’s inception, music enthusiasts have expressed strong interest in an even more portable version—one that could be reliably used with Apple and Android smartphones and tablets.
Now, there are two new DragonFly models that achieve that and more: DragonFly Black ($99 US, €99, £89, $129 CAD) and DragonFly Red ($199 US, €199, £169, $249 CAD)—both scheduled to begin shipping to dealers this month.
AudioQuest and DragonFly designer Gordon Rankin worked alongside Microchip Technology to develop the PIC32MX—a new high-performance, full-speed USB microcontroller solution that delivers improved signal-to-noise ratio and significantly lower power consumption. Drawing 77% less current than the previous microcontroller, the new Microchip PIC32MX microcontroller enables true compatibility with Apple and Android smartphones and tablets*.
For greater overall performance, the new DragonFly models also incorporate improved 32-bit ESS Sabre DAC chips—the 9010 in Black and the higher-performance 9016 in Red—both of which employ minimum-phase filtering for naturally detailed, more authentic sound. While DragonFly Black uses the same high-quality headphone amp and analog volume control found in the original model, DragonFly Red includes the latest ESS headphone amp and a bit-perfect digital volume control that resides on the 9016 DAC chip itself—a sophisticated implementation that ensures maximum fidelity, dynamic contrast, and signal-to-noise ratio.
DragonFly Black will output 1.2 volts—enough power to successfully drive all preamplifier input circuits and a wide range of today’s efficient headphones. Meanwhile, with its higher 2.1-volt output, DragonFly Red will be compatible with a wider range of headphones, including power-hungry, low-efficiency models.
In addition, the new DragonFlys will be software upgradeable through a complimentary Windows or OS X desktop application. As new developments arise in music player applications, streaming protocols, or other associated software, DragonFly users will be able to incorporate those updates to their existing devices.
Introduced at the 2016 Consumer Electronics Show, DragonFly Black and DragonFly Red were named “Stars of CES” by What Hi-Fi? Magazine.
In his glowing reviews, DigitalAudioReview.net’s John Darko concluded, “DragonFly Red and Black are the finest examples of everyman hifi to ever grace these pages. Their value quotients explode the dial.”
